January 5: Feast Day for St. John Neumann
|
(1855):Redemptorists buy Villa Caserta mission house to start Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) association. The mission house was on the grounds of the old St. Matthew's church. It was this church that the Virgin Mary had chosen to place the Our Mother of Perpetual Help icon. It would reside there from 1499 until the church was destroyed in 1798 by Napoleon's army. The icon was thought lost until Father Michael Marchi remembered being told of a painting to which people came to pray to Our Mother he had heard as a young altar boy. With his help, Our Mother of Perpetual Help was returned to the grounds of St. Matthew's church enshrined in the Church of St. Alphonsus in 1866.
