Clip Art

Importing Graphics into a Microsoft Works for Windows v3.x word processing document.

PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY FROM BEGINNING TO END, BEFORE TRYING THEM!

NOTE: These instructions were done using Microsoft Works v3.0 for Windows v3.x. For other versions of Microsoft Works the steps may be slightly different.

This document will give the basic steps for using Liguori Faithware's clip art graphics and Microsoft Works v3.0 for Windows v3.x. These steps are not the only solution, but are given as one way to import clip art images into a Microsoft Works word processing document

Please, take these steps one at a time and S-L-O-W-L-Y.

1. First, make sure you are in Windows and in Microsoft Works. Then begin a new word processing document. You can open a new word processing document by clicking on FILE from the menu bar and then clicking on NEW from the menu that dropped down. You will be prompted for the type of document to create and you should choose Word Processing for this example.

2. We now have a blank "page" for us to type a letter or a memo or whatever. If we want to insert a piece of clip art into our document we start by clicking on INSERT from the menu bar and from the menu that drops down, click on DRAWING.

3. A window will appear and we are going to temporarily move to another part of Microsoft Works called Microsoft Draw so that we can work with graphics. This all happens automatically within Microsoft Works and it is normal behavior for this program.

4. Now we need to pick out the clip art picture from our collection. Click on FILE from the Microsoft Draw menu bar and from the menu that drops down, click on IMPORT.

5. You now have a dialog window that you will use to navigate to the correct directory/folder where the clip art images are stored. You should see a drop down control to change the drive (hard drive, CD-ROM DO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING at. Make sure that we are looking at the right drive.

6. You should also see a list box titled Directories that you can use to move from directory to directory. For this example, let's move to the very top. Scroll up this list to the very top and double-click on the directory named [..].

7. Now, scroll down the list of directories until you find the directory with the clip art images and double-click on it to look inside the directory.

NOTE: For the Catholic Clip Art Collection v2.0, the default directory/folder is CATHCLIP. For the Liturgical Seasons and Feastdays Collection, the default directory/folder is SEASONS. For Catholic Clip Art, the Kid Collection, the default directory/folder is KIDART.

8. For those who have bought our Catholic Clip Art on CD-ROM, the organization of the images on the CD-ROM needs just a little more explanation. Once you double-click on one of the three clip art directories ( CATHCLIP , SEASONS , or KIDART ), you will see another list of directories titled : BMP, PCX , PICT , TIFF , WMF , and WPG . Each of these directories has all the images for a collection in one of six image formats:

Images in a BMP directory are BITMAP graphics. (bitmap)

Images in a PCX directory are PCX graphics. (bitmap)

Images in a PICT directory are Macintosh PICT graphics.

Images in a TIFF directory are TIFF graphics. (bitmap)

Images in a WMF directory are Windows Metafile graphics. (vector)

Images in a WPG directory are WordPerfect graphics. (vector)

 9. Now that you have double-clicked on the directory to look in for clip art images, in the listbox on the left you should see a list of filenames. Scroll up or down this list of images until you find the file containing the clip art image you want and then double-click on the file to select it.

10. Microsoft Draw will now import the file you selected and then display it on the screen.

11. Now that we have our image in Microsoft Draw, we can resize it, or change the color, or do whatever else Microsoft Draw allows us.

12. Now we are ready to bring the image over into our word processing document. To leave the Microsoft Draw portion of Microsoft Works and have the image transferred into your word processing document, click on FILE from the menu bar and from the menu that drops down click on EXIT AND RETURN.

13. A dialog box appears confirming that you wish to update your word processing document. Click on YES to bring the clip art image into your word processing document.

14. There you are !! You did it !!
