Schillebeeckx, Edward. Christ, the Sacrament of the Encounter with God (Sheed and Ward, 1963) is the major presentation of his early contribution to sacramental theology.

Segundo, Juan Luis. The Sacraments Today (Orbis Books, 1974) looks at the sacramental system, its history and its function, from the viewpoint of liberation theology.

Van Roo, William. The Christian Sacraments (Editrice Pontifica Universita Gregoriana, 1992) shows a balanced approach: doctrinal yet not dogmatic, traditional yet not integralist.

Bradshaw, Paul. The Search for the Origins of Christian Worship (SPCK, 1992) reviews what is known about the most ancient liturgical documents and explains what can be learned from them.

Maxwell, William. An Outline of Christian Worship (Oxford University Press, 1936) summarizes liturgical developments through the Middle Ages, then focuses on worship in the churches of the Reformation.

Metzger, Marcel. History of the Liturgy: The Major Stages (Liturgical Press, 1997) focuses primarily on the patristic period, with little attention to developments in medieval and modern times.

Palazzo, Eric. A History of Liturgical Books from the Beginning to the Thirteenth Century (Liturgical Press, 1998), despite its title, focuses largely on developments in the Latin church in the Middle Ages.

Senn, Frank. Christian Liturgy: Catholic and Evangelical (Fortress Press, 1997) is a thorough and detailed history of Christian worship in the West, with some references to Eastern rites.

van Olst, Evert. The Bible and Liturgy (William B. Eerdmans, 1991) exposes the liturgical origins of many scriptures and describes how texts have been used liturgically in history.

White, James. A Brief History of Christian Worship (Abingdon Press, 1993) provides a valuable systematic overview of the major periods in church history.

Casel, Odo. The Mystery of Christian Worship (Crossroad, 1999) is a classic of the liturgical movement, originally published in 1932, that related the Christian mysteries to other religions.

Collins, Patrick. Bodying Forth: Aesthetic Liturgy (Paulist Press, 1992) is a prolonged reflection on John Dewey's philosophy of art and experience applied to Catholic liturgy.

Foley, John. Creativity and the Roots of Liturgy (Pastoral Press, 1994) uses art theory to understand the creation and effectiveness of religious ritual.

Fagerburg, David. What Is Liturgical Theology? (Liturgical Press, 1992) analyzes three different approaches, each of which calls itself liturgical theology.

Fink, Peter. Worship: Praying the Sacraments (Pastoral Press, 1991) is a good example of liturgical theology as reflection on liturgical texts and practices.

Fisch, Thomas, ed. Liturgy and Tradition (St. Vladimir's Seminary Press, 1990) is a collection of essays by Orthodox liturgical theologian, Alexander Schmemann.

Irwin, Kevin. Context and Text (Liturgical Press, 1994) argues that liturgical theology must be based not only on liturgical texts but also on ritual performance and social context.

Lathrop, Gordon. Holy Things (Fortress Press, 1993) attempts to develop a liturgical theology that is both accepting of and critical of traditional Christian worship.

Deiss, Lucien. The Mass (Liturgical Press, 1992) is a step by step analysis of the current Roman rite for the mass. Celebration of the Word (1993) presents a detailed analysis of the first part of the Mass.

Erickson, Craig Douglas. Participating in Worship (Westminster John Knox, 1989) examines the variety of levels and styles of participation in different forms of public worship.

Kinast, Robert. Sacramental Pastoral Care (Pueblo, 1988) addresses sticky pastoral issues connected with the Catholic sacraments.

Madigan, Shawn. Spirituality Rooted in Liturgy (Pastoral Press, 1988) explores Christian attitudes and behaviors that arise from the experience of worship.

Chupungco, Anscar. Cultural Adaptation of the Liturgy (Paulist Press, 1982) argues on historical and anthropological grounds that liturgy should be allowed to evolve in culturally diverse ways. Liturgies of the Future (Paulist Press, 1989) shows how the process of inculturation is grounded in the spirit and documents of Vatican II.
